The serials don't work on version 8, they work fine on the 2007 version. The instruction for !!Disable automatic updates!! is probably due to a serial check performed by the update to detect abuses. That's only a guess on my part as I don't have a problem just using it as is and the updates are probably just to give them some excuse to see if you're naughty or nice.
