In late 1985, Roth assembled a band that many considered a supergroup, composed of guitarist Steve Vai, bass player Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette. Eat 'Em and Smile saw Roth return to hard rock music, and met with huge commercial success.
The Eat 'em and Smile Tour was one of the most successful concert tours of 1986.
In early 1988, Roth released Skyscraper, a more experimental offering than the first solo album. It featured Roth's most famous original solo song, "Just Like Paradise", which was a worldwide hit. Skyscraper was co-produced by Roth and Steve Vai, and displayed the growing influence of the guitarist, featuring on many songs the dense layers of compressed guitars that gave it a unique sound that was to differentiate the album from the more Van Halen-sounding Eat 'Em and Smile.
The album was certified platinum, reaching #6 on the Billboard album chart. Nonetheless,Soon after Skyscraper's release, Billy Sheehan left Roth's band, despite the critical and commercial triumphs of the Skyscraper Tour, Steve Vai left the band to release a solo album.
With Eat 'em and Smile, David Lee Roth's first full-length solo album, Van Halen's former front man proved he didn't need Eddie and the guys behind him to rock the house. There are more than a few echoes of vintage Van Halen in these ten tracks, but in the end this is really and truly David Lee Roth at his best. While the comic and campy aspects of the persona he built around his earlier EP release Crazy From the Heat also showed up here to party, David Lee Roth and his band basically came to the studio to rock hard and heavy and have fun doing it.
David Lee Roth has put out several solo albums since leaving Van Halen, but this "Eat 'Em And Smile"and "Skyscraper" are still his best. His other albums, collectively, are hit and miss (and the hits are scattered). He put out such fantastic stuff with Van Halen, that most of his solo career pales in comparison. "Eat'em And Smile" is short, like most previous VH albums, but it still packs a punch. The sound production is flawless, This shows that David Lee Roth was more than a rock singer, he was an artist of great vision as well.
