An amazing work by an amazing musician. A lot of people pigeonhole Steve Vai into being just another guitarist, a relic of the shred-happy '80s. But take another listen. Forget his stints in Alcatrazz and Whitesnake, forget that ridiculous triple-necked heart guitar that backed David Lee Roth, and listen to Vai's own music, made on his own terms. Yes, he is an incredibly talented guitarist, but he's also much more, a true modern-day composer.
No matter how off-the-wall his songs seem, there's an amazing musical quality and deep spirituality that underscores every note in his truly amazing body of work.
The first phase is pure magic, especially the Fire Garden Suite. His lyrics are a little corny in some of the tracks in phase 2, but his voice, while not the most beautiful in the world, fits every song perfectly. In closing, this is an amazing album in both its scope and its execution, giving the listener a glimpse at the many sides of Steve Vai, the man.
This is a wonderful album. So much melody, so many twists and turns, so much fun. A definite must-have; This album recommended highly enough
First of all this album is divided into two halves, one being instrumental and the other vocal. All About Eve the vocal tunes are totally unmemorable, with silly lyrics (Brother) to boot, diverse and melodic, hauting and sublime..Steve is one of the very best players of any instrument in the history of recorded music from a technical standpoint.
One is the fact that his albums are almost totally instrumental and the other has been his experimentalish which has rarely been easy listening, more a catalogue of awesome skills.
As for Fire Garden, There are great songs to be found, thats for sure, the album is divided in two "phases". The first one consists in 9 (or 10)songs just intrumental. The second phase includes Vai's voice for the first time. It is a true master piece that one would expect from a vurtuoso like Vai.
He surely is one of the most prolific guitar players of our time. How can you have a web-site about guitar playing and not do a piece on Steve Vai! To me, he's the second coming. First there was Jimi Hendrix, and then there was Steve Vai. Sure there have been many guitar players you can say that about... Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, Al Dimeola, Stevie-Ray, Vernon Ried, Eric Johnson and many more.
