When malicious software or virus get into a PC, the instant effect by them is to make their detection difficult by disable Registry Editor, Command prompt, Task manager etc. But Re-Enabling these system files is very difficult. In this condition a portable tool Re-Enable can help you out. Re-Enable Portable is a handy tool that will re enable registry editing, Cmd, Task Manager, System restore and Run command.

This isn't "yet another modified version of windows xp", it includes all basic drivers (that means you won't need to install the cd's that shipped with the cd anymore), some freeware(almost allsoftware included) for the usual user and to avoid compatibility issues / dependencies needed for common uses, and lastly - I admit - some settings the way that I like. And it all fits on a regular 703 MB CD.. (in fact it totals to 697 MB)

It is possible to disable regedit in Windows by adding a DWORD value DisableRegistryTools in registry and setting the value data as 1. Obviously this restriction is meant for administrators to protect their computers in network from being messed around by the users but virus makers has used this feature to prevent the “not-so-leet” users from accessing the registry to possibly remove the virus from autorun. Normally you will see a message that says “Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator” if regedit has been disabled.

When a good and powerful virus infects a computer, most likely it will disable you from running Task Manager (taskmgr.exe), Registry Editor (regedit.exe), Command Prompt (cmd.exe), System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe), configuring Folder Options and hide the Run from Start Menu. Reason the virus does that is because most of the time it is “possible” for computer experts to remove the virus by using the built-in Windows programs without any third party tools
But if you can’t run Task Manager, you cannot end the suspicious process. You could use the taskkill command in command prompt to kill the process but again you won’t be able to do that if CMD has been disabled. Perhaps you can run msconfig to stop the virus from auto startup but also cannot because of the virus. For advance computer users who has knowledge in registry and thought that they could manually remove the virus auto startup entries there, they too can’t do anything about it if regedit has been disabled. Disabling of Folder Options is to stop you from setting your computer to display hidden and system files. This way you can’t see the virus file and hence you won’t be able to delete them.
