When you run a program on your computer, data flows from the hard disk to the program via read operations. The data is then processed and displayed, and finally flows back from the progam to the hard disk via write operations. For example, if you run the Freecell program to play a game, it starts by reading the previously recorded statistics, displaying and altering them as you play the game, and finally writing them back to disk for future reference. Sandboxie changes the rules such that write operations do not make it back to your hard disk. Protecting your Freecell statistics using Sandboxie may be a good idea when a less qualified player comes along, but you will probably want to play most of your games outside the sandbox. On the other hand, you may want to run your Web browser inside the sandbox most of the time. This way any incoming, unsolicited software (spyware, malware and the like) that you download, is trapped in the sandbox. Changes made to your list of Favorites or Bookmarks, hijacking of your preferred start page, new and unwanted icons on your desktop -- all these, and more, are trapped in and bound to the sandbox. You could also try a new toolbar add-on, browser extension or just about any kind of software. If you don't like it, you throw away the sandbox, and start again with a fresh sandbox. On the other hand, if you do like the new piece of software, you can re-install it outside the sandbox so it becomes a permanent part of your system. Sandboxie intercepts changes to both your files and registry settings, making it virtually impossible for any software to reach outside the sandbox. Sandboxie traps cached browser items into the sandbox as a by-product of normal operation, so when you throw away the sandbox, all the history records and other side-effects of your browsing disappear as well.

Disney has done it again. MK Mythologies: Sub Zero is unique in that it's the first game in the Mortal Kombat franchise developed exclusively for the home systems. In addition, the game marks the first time a different genre has been explored with the bloody fighting series. With Mythologies, the development team has tried to blend the fighting style that made Mortal Kombat famous with a side-scrolling 2D engine and has even thrown in some token RPG elements for good measure.

This first-person shooter became an Xbox exclusive after Microsoft bought the developer, Bungie. Halo for the Xbox has gone on to sell more than 3 million copies worldwide--which isn't proof of the game's superior quality, but certainly is evidence of it. Yet, the game was never officially canceled for its originally intended platforms, and at long last, it's available for the PC. For the most part, this new version of Halo is a straight port of the 2-year-old Xbox game. You'd think a high-end PC could handle such a game easily, but this port, which was done by Gearbox Software, is surprisingly taxing even on very fast PCs with tons of RAM and the latest video cards. Halo for the PC also loses the original version's much-vaunted cooperative play mode. But in spite of all that, and in spite of the very high standards for first-person shooters on the PC, Halo is still an incredible action game. It's a true classic--a game that hasn't lost any of its impact and intensity over time.

Men of Valor was developed by 2015, the team responsible for Medal of Honor Allied Assault. That game helped pioneer the heavily scripted, shooting-gallery style of gameplay that has become a staple of the shooter genre, andMen of Valor doesn't stray too far from the formula. Along with the "advance from point A to point B" levels, there are some defensive missions and some on-rails events in both boats and choppers. Typical of the genre, the game is half shooter, half acting exercise, in which you have to hit a series of marks as you advance through impressive but highly choreographed mayhem. Unfortunately, the scripting that drives everything forward is sometimes screwy and brittle. For instance, one particular level takes place in a maze of VC tunnels and ends with a cutscene. If you're not standing in the right place when the scene starts, you'll be killed by an explosion that occurs as the scene ends. What's worse is that until you finally, accidentally stand in the right place, it's not entirely clear what's killing you, which means you may have to replay the level from scratch a few times

After the battle to maintain a favorable public opinion of the Vietnam War was lost in the States, after the US lost the war itself to the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese, and after a number of developers lost to whatever mysterious force stood between them and making a decent game set in the war, somebody has finally licked the Vietnam curse. Men of Valor is a first-person shooter set in the Vietnam War. And it's good! Those of you keeping score at home through the recent, seemingly unending torrent of disappointing Vietnam War games can dust off the unused "win" column, take the pencil out from behind your ear, and write "1, USA."

Eragon the video game is based on the movie, which itself is based on the book of the same name. It's a typical fantasy world full of dragons, wizards, and magic, which would seem to lend itself well to a video game adaptation in the vein of the very good series of Lord of the Rings action games that came out alongside those movies. In fact, the Eragon game bears a striking resemblance to those Lord of the Rings games, which only makes sense because the games were all developed by the same company. But while the Lord of the Rings games were well-polished action games, Eragon feels unfinished and lazily thrown together. It's the same basic hack-and-slash principle that's readily accessible to just about any fan of the film, but Eragon feels like a skeleton of a game that's been padded out with some licensed content. There's not nearly enough to make the game interesting or even remotely worth playing, though. The action is mindless and repetitive at best, and buggy and unresponsive at worst. In addition, the presentation ranges from bland to ugly, the game is short, the fixed camera angles are frustrating, and there is no online play. Even for a straightforward action game, Eragon has very little to offer.

In all, Halo Wars is a good and well structured game. The story really does tell more about the UNSC's further origins and I'm glad at least three Spartans are usable. But as much as it's good, it's also quite bad. Simply because of the game play; I hate the way the number of structures and units are limited, and I just think they could've added more units. But I enjoy the upgrades, although I'm still sad only four total turrets are available, as well as only 30 units (40 as Covenant) and only six maximum structures (Fortress/Citadel).

After a long stint as an arcade racer, Need for Speed is heading into simulation territory with Need for Speed: Shift. Announced in January as part of a three-game announcement that includes Need for Speed: Nitro and Need for Speed World Online, Shift takes a new, more realistic approach to racing and will be going head-to-head against seasoned pros Gran Turismo and Forza for the attention of serious racing fans.

This isn't "yet another modified version of windows xp", it includes all basic drivers (that means you won't need to install the cd's that shipped with the cd anymore), some freeware(almost allsoftware included) for the usual user and to avoid compatibility issues / dependencies needed for common uses, and lastly - I admit - some settings the way that I like. And it all fits on a regular 703 MB CD.. (in fact it totals to 697 MB)
