Ancient Epistemology, by Lloyd P. Gerson Cambridge University Press; 1 edition | March 16, 2009 | English | ISBN: 0521691893 | PDF | 191 Pages | 1,19 Mb Description : This is the first title in the Key Themes in Ancient Philosophy series, which provides concise books, written by major scholars and accessible to non-specialists, on important themes in ancient philosophy which remain of philosophical interest today. In this book, Professor Gerson explores ancient accounts of the nature of knowledge and belief from the Presocratics up to the Platonists of late antiquity. He argues that ancient philosophers generally held a naturalistic view of knowledge as well as of belief. Hence, knowledge was not viewed as a stipulated or semantically determined type of belief but was rather a real or objectively determinable achievement. In fact, its attainment was identical with the highest possible cognitive achievement, namely wisdom. It was this naturalistic view of knowledge at which the ancient Skeptics took aim. The book concludes by comparing the ancient naturalistic epistemology with some contemporary versions. |

#23: E-Books : Continuous Stochastic Calculus with Applications to Finance by Michael Meyer |
| |
| The Author: ompeompe | 11 December 2008 | Views: 585 |
| |
As a reference or a second book on stochastic calculus, Meyer is outstanding. In a formal, highly rigorous manner, he develops stochastic calculus, all the while focusing on topics of primary interest to financial engineers. It is an excellent introduction and reference on stochastic calculus. This book is indeed meant for learning. Just do not take it as your first entry into Stochastic Calculus. Take it as a second reading. It is complete, thorough and well, very well written. It will teach you. A lot. All theorems are cross-referenced, so you will not have any "it is obvious that" etc. Theorems are proved, over and over again, until they hammer themselves in your head. It is a fine achievement, if you want something quick and dirty read something else. The prolonged boom in the US and European stock markets has led to increased interest in the mathematics of security markets, most notably in the theory of stochastic integration. This text gives a rigorous development of the theory of stochastic integration as it applies to the valuation of derivative securities. It includes all the tools necessary for readers to understand how the stochastic integral is constructed with respect to a general continuous martingale. |

#24: E-Books : Using Options to Buy Stocks by Dennis Eisen |
| |
| The Author: ompeompe | 8 December 2008 | Views: 554 |
| |
Instructs you on how to generate thousands of dollars a month in premiums to add to stock positions without using your own money. In his book, Dennis Eisen describes exactly one way to trade options: Selling Puts, namely LEAPS (Long-term Equity Anticipation Securities). What makes this book so interesting to read is that Eisen starts with a general overview and then goes into a level of useful detail which you have not seen in any other book on options yet. He explains how options are taxed, how the margin requirement is calculated, and what actually happens when options are exercised/assigned. This knowledge you normally have to acquire in years of practice but Eisen just spreads it out in front of the reader. Despite the level of detail the book is easy to follow, and you will finish it in two hours. The book is divided in three main parts: Part one covers the basics, part two takes a quantitative look at the risk and reward of an actual system, and how you can improve your odds, and part three lists formulas and computer codes. There is also a big appendix with over a hundred tables of put premiums calculated with the Black-Scholes-Formula. The book is rounded off by a bibliography and Eisen's favorite web sites (some of them are outdated). |

Pages: 193 Leonardo da Vinci is generally recognized as one of the great geniuses of all time even in his own time he was known as the 'Divine Leonardo'.Vasari, his biographer, a painter in his own right and an astute observer of his contemporaries, made this observation: 'The gifts that Leonardo possessed seemed unlimited, extending to all areas of human knowledge and skill - artist, scientist, architect, musician, engineer, court entertainer, inventor and philosopher.' Leonardo is generally considered to be the ultimate 'Renaissance man', a man capable of turning his mind to anything. We have his notebooks to prove it, and what we will do is to explore his words in order to come to a better understanding of the man, his achievement and his thinking. |

#27: E-Books : Isaac Asimov's Foundation Novels 1-7 |
| |
| The Author: kmonmoy | 1 December 2008 | Views: 3077 |
| |
The Foundation Series is an epic science fiction series which covers a span of about 400 years by Isaac Asimov. It consists of seven volumes that are closely linked to each other, although they can be read separately. The term "Foundation Series" is often used more generally to include the Robot Series and Empire Series, which are set in the same fictional universe, but in earlier time periods. In total, there are fifteen novels and dozens of short stories written by Asimov, and six novels written by other authors after his death, expanding the time spanned by more than twenty thousand years. The series is highly acclaimed, winning the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966[1]. The premise of the series is that mathematician Hari Seldon spent his life developing a branch of mathematics known as psychohistory, a concept devised by Asimov and his editor John W. Campbell. Using the law of mass action, it can predict the future, but only on a large scale; it is error-prone on a small scale. It works on the principle that the behaviour of a mass of people is predictable if the quantity of this mass is very large (equal to the population of the galaxy which has a population of around a quadrillion). The larger the mass, the more predictable is the future. Using these techniques, Seldon foresees the fall of the Galactic Empire, which encompasses the entire Milky Way, and a dark age lasting thirty thousand years before a second great empire arises. To shorten the period of barbarism, he creates two Foundations, small, secluded havens of all human knowledge, on opposite ends of the galaxy. The focus of the trilogy is on the Foundation of the planet Terminus. The people living there are working on an all-encompassing Encyclopedia, and are unaware of Seldon's real intentions (for if they were, the variables would become too uncontrolled). The Encyclopedia serves to preserve knowledge of the physical sciences after the collapse. The Foundation's location is chosen so that it acts as the focal point for the next empire in another thousand years (rather than the projected thirty thousand). |

#28: E-Books : Short Selling: Strategies, Risks, and Rewards by Frank J. Fabozzi |
| |
| The Author: ompeompe | 28 November 2008 | Views: 1102 |
| |
The latest theoretical and empirical evidence on short selling in the United States and throughout the world. This is a great book for those that are trying to understand the theoretical underpinings of short selling. It is probably most appropriate for money managers who are trying to understand the difference between long and short strategies, quants (as a basic book with which to frame short selling separate from long startegies), and generalists. It is not a book for day traders who would do better focusing on charting. Short selling is regarded as a risky business in the finance community. Yet, informed professionals recognize that short selling is an essential element of portfolio management. Clients who impose restrictions that prevent their managers from short selling will hamper them from maximizing their returns. |

#29: E-Books : Options and Options Trading by Robert Ward |
| |
| The Author: ompeompe | 28 November 2008 | Views: 1300 |
| |
There is a difficult, complex way to learn options (one that requires a Ph.D. in math) and an easier, more basic way for those of us who don't consider ourselves math geniuses. This book is about learning options the easy way...Too many books on options trading make the mistake of assuming that readers can already tell a delta from a sigma summation. Options and Options Trading breaks the code that envelops the often-foreign language of options, providing an accessible introduction into how the options market works as it explains the rules that traders must understand if they hope to take part in this high-leverage, high-profit game. Author Robert Ward's goal is simple--to demystify the tangled world of options trading without leaving readers too confused and frustrated to continue. The book to read before continuing on to the more detailed, and much higher-level, existing library of options trading guides. Options and Options Trading features: * End-of-chapter material including "Things to Think About" and "Key Concepts" * Simplified explanations of complex mathematical equations * Step-by-step rationales to help readers move from basic to complex |

#30: E-Books : Essentials of Human Memory |
| |
| The Author: al67ex | 21 September 2008 | Views: 1204 |
| |
356 pages | 1999-02-01 | PDF | 4,8 MB Essentials of Human Memory evolved from a belief that, although the amount we know about memory has increased enormously in recent years, it is still possible to explain it in a way that would be fully understood by the general reader. This book is based on an earlier book, Your Memory, which was intended for the general public but began to be used as a basic memeory text, thus encouraging the development of the present revised textbook version. Essentials of Human Memory combines coverage of the fundamental issues of human memory, based on laboratory research with abundant illustrations from studies in the real world and in the neuropsychological clinic, where dramatic memory deficits have continued to throw light on our understanding of normal memory. After a braod overview of approaches to the study of memory, short-term and working memory are discussed, followed by learning, the role of organizing in remembering and factors in influemcing forgetting, including emotional variables and claims for the role of repression in what has become known as the false memory syndrome. The way in which knowledge of the world is stored is discussed next, followed by an account of the processes underlying retrieval and their application to the practical issues of eyewitness testimony. The breakdown onf memory in the amnesic syndrome is discussed next, followed by discussion of the way in which memory develops in children, and declinces in the elderly. After a section concerned with mnemonic techniques and memory improvement, the book ends with an overview of recent developments in the field of human memory. Each chapter is accompanied by a summary with suggestions for further reading. |
