Steve Vai’s technical mastery of the guitar is such that, like a gunslinger of old, he used to challenge the audience at Frank Zappa gigs to bring along music scores for him to sight read live on stage. Naturally enough Vai’s reputation spread and his solos soon became one of the benchmarks that aspiring guitarists measure themselves against.

A brief spell in 1985 with Alcatrazz (replacing Yngwie Malmsteen), followed by a couple of years with David Lee Roth, who had by that time split, very publicly, from Eddie Van Halen. His iconic status also led to a collaboration with Ibanez with whom has designed several signature guitars.

Steve Vai's guitar work on that album is really amazing, and for the most part totally unconventional. What a monster.

What’s What With … Steve Vai
You may not know the name Steve Vai. But unless you think that heavy metal is just the stuff you don’t want in your drinking water, you’ve undoubtedly heard his screamingly fast guitar work, since he’s played with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne,David Lee Roth, Frank Zappa, and Whitesnake. Since leaving that world of overindulgence in the ’80s, Vai has maintained a successful solo career with more than a dozen albums; he appears tonight at the Keswick and on Saturday at the Borgata. I caught up with this six-string soldier before sound check. — Victor Fiorillo

This is an amazingly complete and accurate collection... musicians attempting to learn and to replicate the Beatles sound will not be disappointed. Included are all instrument parts, all vocal parts, and chord names above the staff, with tablature for the bass and guitar parts.

This book gets the original arrangements as played by the Beatles which are generally much better and actually easier to play a lot of times. You can discern McCartney's piano style which is not technically difficult. After all you are accompanying a voice and not playing a melody.

The arrangements are virtually perfect and accurate. For a guitarist, having the music, tabs, and chords allows you to invest as much or little effort as you want in learning different parts of each song - the transcriptions compliment each other.

OK forget these south american reviewers who have never heard of the most of the guitarists on this album. At the same time, forget the American people who have NEVER heard of these guitarists because they are too busy listening to poppy girl grabbing bands like KORN and Limp Bizkit. This album was released in Japan for a reason and this reason is that the Japanese appreciate a good ass rocking guitar session. Their pop music is indicative of this as most Japanese pop songs have an average of 4 guitar solos per every 7 songs as compared to America where it is one guitar solo per seven pop songs.

George Lynch and John Petrucci come out as the most technical guitarists on this albums. Everyone else is stand by on rock and blues scales. Of course that would have been Lynch as well if it were not for his recent (1994) lessons at Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles.

For once we also get to hear John Petrucci go improv as most of the Dream Theater series guitars have been mainly real hard studio work and composing. You can tell the difference in each guitarist as each uses his own unique sound on the album.

This is a must have both in session creativity and unique guitar theory for the avid guitar listener/fan. No, Greg Howe does not make a special appearance (though in my opinion, Greg and his star pupil, Prashant Aswani, excel above these sessioneers) in this album, but there is plenty to listen to otherwise like Andy Timmons, Brad Gillis, and Al Pitrelli (virtual unknowns in modern guitar).
