This was the first Megadeth album to feature Marty Friedman and Nick Menza. After Cacophony called it quits because of a lack of commercial success, Marty taught guitar for a brief period, and then took over the position of lead guitarist for Megadeth. Megadeth soon released Rust In Peace, which was a huge success, undoubtably because of the contribution that Marty made to the album. Marty together with new drummer Nick Menza instantly redefined Megadeth's sound.

Marty's innovative leads added a new dimention to the band, which was before mostly driven by Dave Mustaine's aggressive rhythm guitar. In this excellent popular history, medieval historian Tyerman offers a short introduction to the Crusades, touching on the most salient features and helping readers understand why it's so important to ferret out from all the lore what really happened. While it's a tall order to present more than four centuries of wars spanning three continents, Tyerman rises to the task with aplomb, noting early on that "much of what passes in public as knowledge of the Crusades is either misleading or false." The Crusades were not, he says, solely wars against Islam, and their main purpose wasn't to impose Western economic or political leadership, especially since "there existed no strategic or material interest for the knights of the west to campaign in Judea." Tales concerning knights have always carried an undeniable whiff of romance about them. Crusader knights even more so. As depicted by novels and Hollywood movies alike, they were dashing fellows who marched off bravely to the Holy Land intent on liberating it from the hands of the godless infidel hoards. That image is overdue a reassessment in the modern age, when holy war has once again become an unpleasant reality. This is the task that has been undertaken by Oxford historian Christopher Tyerman. He chops away ruthlessly at the myth to uncover the nuggets of truth at its core. The Crusades could have been an extreme act of religious faith. Alternatively they may have simply been a symptom of European colonialism. Whatever else they were, the Crusades symbolise what fear of the unknown can do to the most rational of societies. Don't expect Donna's Disco Christmas. She proves to be another pop diva who is not afraid to keep the Christ in Christmas in this well crafted, classic, and highly recommended additon to any Christmas music collection. While this CD covers some solemn and religious Christmas standards (a far cry from the orgasmic moaning of her disco anthem "Love to Love you Baby" ), it does so with the power and passion expected of a true diva. She puts the spirit of the season in your heart on some standard spiritual Christmas classics such as "O Come All Ye Faithful, "O Holy NIght" and a medley of "What Child is This, "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "Joy to the World". Her orginal tracks, "Christmas Spirit" and "Lamb of God" capture the essence of the season with the most heart warming lyrics and her passionate vocals as does her version of Amy Grant's "Mary, Breath of Heaven" (These are the ones that will give you the chills).

It doesn't take much listening to Amy Winehouse's 1960s pop period piece to realize that this is a tribute with an edge. Nice girls back then didn't sing about boozing and rehab. Since her 2003 debut album, 'Frank', Winehouse has been a frequent presence on the gossip pages of the U.K. tabloids, and her songwriting here candidly reflects her experiences with drinking, sex, and drugs. Back To Black's production is an artful blend of sophisticated 60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with 'Tears Dry on Their Own' incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends". Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, 'Back To Black' is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.

Contemplative and elegiac, this score for Jet Li's martial-arts movie is light years away from your usual Hollywood action music--even when the pace picks up, it remains evocative and elegant, with a tinge of underlying melancholy. For this we have to thank Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi (formerly of the rock band EX), who also gave us marvelous scores for Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love and Zhang Yimou's House of Flying Daggers. Here he relies on roiling percussion, ethereal choirs, and Japanese and Chinese flutes to suggest both the 19th-century setting of the film and an end-of-an-era mood. Look for "Habanera" from Carmen buried toward the end, performed by Japanese soprano Michiko Hayashi and--befitting such a relatively pared-down album--a lone piano.
