Sometimes we forget how bad it can be, and then we howl over minor bad times in the markets. We may be past a mania in residential housing, but we have not really experienced a panic or crash yet. People squeal over how bad the equity market is, but recently we haven’t had anything like the 2000-2002 experience, much less the 1973-1974 or 1929-1932 experience. You will see that manias and their subsequent fallout are endemic to Western culture. Someone living a full life over the last 300+ years would see one or two big ones, and numerous small ones. Relatively free societies give people freedom to make mistakes. Given the way that people chase performance, we can all make mistakes as a group, with large booms and busts. Much as the regulators might want to tame it, they can pretty much only affect what kind of cr isis we get, and not whether we get one. He is somewhat prescient in suggesting that the leverage inherent in derivatives post-LTCM could be the next cr isis. This book is a better one if you like the stories, and don’t want to dig into the theories. This is an excellent book as far as dissecting manias and trying to understand them. |

#8: E-Books : The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World by Alan Greenspan |

Greenspan offers a revealing yet monotonous look at the inner workings of the Federal Reserve and his career. Beginning with his childhood in Manhattan, where he learned percentages by memorizing Yankee batting statistics, Greenspan relates his tremendous passion for economics and politics that propelled him to become chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve for nearly 20 years. While various tales about his often-troubled relationships with former presidents and their administrations will appeal to history buffs, the material is presented in a manner that makes the narration long-winded and dreary. Greenspan's "The Age of Turbulence" is a tour de force, an incredibly engaging, insightful, and detailed look, not only at the life and history of the most famous economist of the U.S., but of the key economic events that have shaken, molded, and served as the crucible for the global economy of the 21st century. Make no mistake about it: this is a book that will easily become a de facto standard of the genre, and will remain so for years to come. In the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, in his fourteenth year as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Alan Greenspan took part in a very quiet collective effort to ensure that America didn't experience an economic meltdown, taking the rest of the world with it. There was good reason to fear the worst: the stock market crash of October 1987, his first major cr isis as Federal Reserve Chairman, coming just weeks after he assumed control, had come much closer than is even today generally known to freezing the financial system and triggering a genuine financial panic. But the most remarkable thing that happened to the economy after 9/11 was...nothing. What in an earlier day would have meant a crippling shock to the system was absorbed astonishingly quickly. |

MP3 | 12 Tracks | Genre: Folk/Rock | 54.4 MB Shelby Lynne's new CD builds on the unassuming honesty and elegance of her last release, "Identity Cr isis", letting the solid songwriting and intimate vocals shine through. There is a quiet smoldering beneath the laid-back surface of her music that draws you in like a southern storm. A nice endpiece to the album is her sultry version of "Rainy Night In Georgia" (called "track 12" for some reason). Shelby's the real deal. If you liked "Identity Cr isis", you will like this. Track Listings:1. Go With It 2. Where Am I Now 3. I Cry Everyday 4. You're The Man 5. Old Times Sake 6. I Won't Die Alone 7. You And Me 8. Johnny Met June 9. You Don't Have A Heart 10. Iced Tea |
