Deposited on a lonely island in the Pacific, they make do with Yankee ingenuity where Chance has left them nothing. Only later do they find they have a hidden benefactor: Captain Nemo, of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, who resides, alone, secretly on the island. In time, the tiny colony becomes so prosperous that it is able to rescue another castaway from an island a hundred miles away. But all their work will come to naught - their island's volcano is about to awake! Read by Mark F. Smith. |

Jules Verne | ISBN-10: 1400100704 | 2003 | English | MP3 (32 kb/s) | 155 Mb French Professor Aronnax and his servant join the Abraham Lincoln, an American frigate, on a mission to find and destroy a "sea-unicorn of colossal dimensions, armed not with a halberd, but with a real spur, as the armored frigates." The undersea monster is thought to be responsible for the disappearance of over 200 ships. When they encounter the "gigantic cetacean" it disables the Abraham Lincoln and knocks Professor Aronnax, his servant, and the hot-tempered harpooner, Ned Land overboard. The three must cling to the beast or drown; soon they realize that it is really a man-made underwater vehicle. Captain Nemo captures the men on his incredible submarine, the Nautilus. The captain and his unwilling passengers thus embark on a deep-sea odyssey that stretches from the palm-strewn Indian Ocean to the frozen peril of the South Pole. But the enigmatic Nemo has a darker purpose for his voyage...revenge on humanity. Not just a suspense ridden drama, this classic novel, written in 1873, predicts with astonishing accuracy the advanced technology and inventions of the 20th century and has inspired generations of science fiction writers. Journey to the Center of the Earth is inspired by Jules Verne's classic novel of the same name, but if you haven't read it, don't worry: The game's story stands on its own (even if it's very wobbly on its narrative feet). Taking part in a popular adventure game trend, Journey puts you in the shoes of a young female character, in this case a photojournalist named Ariane. Ariane is poorly fleshed out, though, and certainly won't make you forget better-written adventure game heroines like Nico Collard, April Ryan, or Kate Walker. Ariane finds herself in dire straits from the get-go. A helicopter sets her down by the edge of a volcano in Iceland so she can take pictures. Soon after, a rockslide destroys the chopper, and when Ariane ventures into a nearby cave, she tumbles down into darkness. Tags: Game |
