Chinese chronicles from as early as the sixth century speak of a kingdom called Po- Li on the northern tip of what is now Sumatra. Arabic writings and Indian inscriptions from around the 9th century also mention this area and its obvious importance.

The Partopi Tao Indonesian Music Ensemble, who play exclusively on traditional hand instruments, developed complex traditions of instrumental music -- from one of the very few societies in the world to use tuned drums to carry a melody. The music on this album is derived from the original soundtrack Kitaro created for NHK’s documentary special “Silk Road Journey” for a popular Japanese television series. The series would run for five years, which had begun in 1979, for total cost of over 50,000,000.00. In addition to Kitaro, NHK was also considering ten other musicians at that time but commissioned Kitaro based on the music from his album “Oasis”. (Kitaro was around 27 years old at this time.)

Mr. Tamai, Chief Producer for NHK, initially conceived the Silk Road project and Mr. Nandi, Kitaro’s producer, promoted this symphonic arrangement.

All compositions by Kitaro and conducted by Paul Buckmaster with The London Symphony Orchestra in October 1980.

This album was Kitaro’s first studio recording in two years, released in February 1986. Kitaro’s album Light of the Spirit was soon to follow one year later with the Grammy award for the single track “The Field”.

The music Kitaro composed for this album was inspired by a significant change in direction toward the west while the NHK crew were filming for the “Silk Road Journey” television series. The music also reflects the hardships and peace they encountered along the way, their connection without time, and their seemingly auspicious endless journey.

The first holiday album from Kitaro charted among the highest holiday releases in 1996. On this album Kitaro takes long-time holiday favorites and one original composition and interprets them as only Kitaro can. Peace on Earth features the Children of the International Peace Choir. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Earth Communications Office (E.C.O.), which is a non-profit, entertainment based, environmental charity organization.

Kitaro presents ‘Spiritual Garden’ as another uniquely themed album inspired by the Harupin-Ha Butoh Dance Theatre of Koichi Tamano. Kitaro first introduced Tamano in the video Tamayura that features a unique combination of Kitaro’s signature sound married to visuals of colorful scenes and surreal, almost magical ethereal dance routines.
