McGraw−Hill | PDF | 664 Page | 3.58 MB This book started over a burger in a downtown Seattle café in late 2001. I was reflecting with my editor, Ann Sellers, about the discussions we had just had with the Microsoft .NET protagonists. We came to the conclusion that if Microsoft could pull off the .NET Framework, it would change software development at least for the Windows operating systems forever. This book's publication is testimony to the achievement that is the .NET Framework and, in particular, Visual Basic .NET. Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Framework and I go back almost five years when I was an aggressive Java programmer (of course, the framework was just a nameless, mysterious OO project at MS then). While I worked with several flavors of Java, all my customers needed stuff for the Windows platform. Visual J++ was my tool of choice (especially after programming Delphi for a few years). Then, delegates (those so−called object−oriented function pointers) and other things that Microsoft was doing with Java hit a nerve center at the house of Sun. The result was the Intifada between the two software makers that stopped VJ++ in its tracks. |

#14: E-Books : The Art of The Infinite - The Pleasures of Mathematics (NEW) |

Robert Kaplan and Ellen Kaplan, "The Art of The Infinite: The Pleasures of Mathematics" Oxford | ISBN: 0-19-514743-X | 324 Pages | PDF | 2.6 Mb We commonly think of ourselves as little and lost in the infinite stretches of time and space, so that it comes as a shock when the French poet Baudelaire speaks of “cradling our infinite on the finite seas.” Really? Is it ourself, our mind or spirit, that is infinity’s proper home? Or might the infinite be neither out there nor in here but only in language, a pretty conceit of poetry? We are the language makers, and what we express always refers to something—though not, perhaps, to what we first thought it did. Talk of the infinite naturally belongs to that old, young, ageless conversation about number and shape which is mathematics: a conversation most of us overhear rather than partake in, put off by its haughty abstraction. Mathematics promises certainty—but at the cost, it seems, of passion. Its initiates speak of playfulness and freedom, but all we come up against in school are boredom and fear, wedged between iron rules memorized without reason. |

#19: E-Books : From Genesis to Genetics - The Case of Evolution and Creation (NEW) |

|
| |
ISBN 0-520-22441-8 | English | 241 pages | PDF | 6.4 MB The clash between evolution and creationism is one of the most hotly contested topics in education today. This book, written by one of America's most distinguished science educators, provides essential background information on this difficult and important controversy. Giving a sweeping and balanced historical look at both schools of thought, John A. Moore shows that faith can exist alongside science, that both are essential to human happiness and fulfillment, but that we must support the teaching of science and the scientific method in our nation's schools. This highly informative book will be an invaluable aid for parents, teachers, and law makers, as well as for anyone who wants a better understanding of this debate. From Genesis to Genetics shows us why we must free both science and religion to do the good work for which each is uniquely qualified. Using accessible language, Moore describes in depth these two schools of thought. He begins with an analysis of the Genesis story, examines other ancient creation myths, and provides a nuanced discussion of the history of biblical interpretation. After looking at the tenets and historical context of creationism, he presents the history of evolutionary thought, explaining how it was developed, what it means, and why it is such a powerful theory. Moore goes on to discuss the relationship of nineteenth-century religion to Darwinism, examine the historic Scopes trial, and take us up to the current controversy over what to teach in schools. Most important, this book also explores options for avoiding confrontations over this issue in the future. |
