Hinterland: Orc Lords Review
Orc Lords is an extension of the original Hinterland, a medieval-style RTS that combines battles and building into a single, colorful package. The game begins, like so many others, with character selection. After choosing an avatar, you are essentially plopped into the middle of the playing grounds. Your ruler declares that he expects you to turn the land into something great, a task made even more daunting by the game’s lack of training instruction or tutorial sections. This is problematic for any game in the real-time strategy genre; fortunately, Hinterland is relatively familiar in its feel and operation. Juggling the game’s resources require that you take part in a sort of balancing act, comprised of exploration, fighting, and construction.

Since the game starts with very little to offer in the way of resources, it relies upon the player’s initiative to head out into the wilderness and start hacking up baddies. Movement and controls in the game are thankfully simple, though a few things would have been better clarified in a tutorial. This forces you to learn much of the game through raw experience, which some would argue is more effective, anyway. Picking on foes of an inferior level is your best bet for collecting money early in the game. Zombies, dark elves, skeleton warriors – they’re all just mobile purses for you to rip apart. Bullying enough of these baddies also results in a boost to your reputation, and – assuming you are successful in your ventures – more folks will want to join your town. Attracting visitors through your success is crucial to progress, as they help with anything from production of food to creating slick battle equipment for you and your followers. If circumstances demand it (or if you’ve had a particularly bad day), you may conscript villagers and force them to fight for you in battle.

It's not all mindless carnage though, as the real-time lighting has been integrated into the gameplay itself. Most monsters don't like light and rather stay in the shadows, making your portable light important part of the gameplay. Monsters also get blinded for a short time if you point the light straight at their eyes. Together with more or less destructible settings, Shadowgrounds offers one of the most interactive environments in top-down arcade shooters.

Fight as British, Americans, Russians or Germans through more than 30 challenging missions across Europe in this tactical 3D isometric Real Time Strategy game. Although it might sound like a typical World War II RTS, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II has some features that makes it unique. The most distinct feature is Direct Control that allows you to precisely command your units and vehicles (such as a tank or a jeep), with the arrow keys to move and mouse to aim with. This gives the the feel of an old time arcade action game. Note that this is not like other action- strategy games (i.e. Battlezone) that changes the perspective to an first person view, but keeps the isometric view throughout the game. Other features that sets it apart from the RTS norm is the advanced physics engine that allows everything to be destroyed and a hit system where for example tanks take more damage from the rear than from the front (no energy bars like in other RTS games). This gives the game additional depth to the tactical mechanics of the game. Things like these in combination with the openness of each map makes sure that there is always several ways to complete each mission. The game also features an inventory system similar to RPGs, with a drag and drop interface. This allows you to pick up equipment from fallen enemy soldiers.

rFactor includes an updated 15 degrees of freedom physics engine, advanced tire modelling, complex aerodynamics, cockpit vibrations, detailed bump modelling and a track-specific terrain data file system. An advanced graphics engine, updated sound engine with changing engine sounds based on upgraded vehicle performance, projected headlights for night driving, and real-time day/night transitions are also features of the latest version.

World War II Panzer Claws is a real-time strategy game that depicts the struggles in war torn Europe between 1941 and 1944. Set in a real time World War II scenario, the player takes control of a variety of armored and mechanical units, ground troops and air support units in epic battles of skill and nerve. The game spans the German attack on the Soviet Union through to other important
battles on the Eastern Front, operations in France and Italy to the German offensive in the Ardennes. You can play as German, Soviet or Allied troops in both the single player campaign mode and multiplayer modes. The game is the first to use Reality Pump’s newly developed ‘Earth-3’ engine, which enables stunning graphics and spectacular levels of detail.

Finally, somebody made a kid's edition of the popular "Millionaire" game show. Children love to play along with the grown-up version, but are quickly stumped by its increasingly difficult questions. Now, they have a
chance to make it all the way to the grand prize, with over 600 child-friendly questions on popular movies, songs, games, sports and more. When we played, we ran into questions on the Rugrats TV show, animal paws, nursery rhymes, American history, astronomy and US geography. The realism of the TV show is still there, including the sometimes excessive Regis video and commentary. As in the original game, kids have access to the three lifelines for help. Single and two player modes lend variety.

Gangland, the long anticipated RTS from Whiptail Interactive, is finally seeing release. The game promised a huge, open-ended game universe, action-oriented RTS gameplay and the ability to control many aspects of the Mafioso universe. However, the game falls short of the mark and many flaws prevent the game from living up to its potential. The games take on the “gangster game subgenre is appreciated, although there are better offerings (as well as better RTS games).
Gangland puts you in the shoes of Mario Mangano, an immigrant from Sicily on a mission of revenge. It seems that three of your brothers murdered a fourth and then fled to Paradise City to make their mark on the crime underworld. You come to Paradise City to work under your uncle Vincenzo, find and kill your murderous brothers and build up your own criminal empire.

The first missions in the game are pretty standard RTS fare. In the first mission, you gain control of Mario and another henchman as you go around and collect extortion money from nearby businesses. These missions are randomly eventful, as sometimes you can complete these without a hitch and other times the thugs at the businesses will open fire on you, forcing you to kill them off. As the game progresses, you gain the ability to hire more and more henchmen, thus giving you a source of troops to complete the more intense missions in the game (as in when you have to kill off other mob bosses and so forth). The missions get harder and more complex as the game moves along, often requiring you to use resources like cars in order to complete them. Eventually, as you begin to gain control of the mob and its resources, the game will take more of a shift to the simulation aspects, requiring you to run your mob as you would any business, by taking over other businesses. In another strange gameplay twist, you can get a wife and have children (who can then go on to work in your business as they grow up).

We play Cuban Missile Crisis. If an American U2 had been shot down over Cuba during the 1962 Missile Crisis, and the Soviets had been a tad more assertive about their desire to keep nuclear missile bases in Cuba, then perhaps the world would have gone to war again, resulting in the greatest conflict in all history. Wouldn't that have been exciting and ******. Cuban Missile Crisis: The Aftermath answers that rhetorical question with a resounding no and yes. This is a strategy game in which you can play out some of the battles of history that never were, and later wish that you had never bothered. In that sense, this is a lot like real warfare. CMC: TA offers the options of being China, The Soviet Union, Germany/France or America/England. Each of these different factions plays out a different campaign. To be honest, it really doesn't matter who you pick as the gameplay is going to screw you no matter who you are. There are some differences in hardware and whatnot between factions though, so pick your poison and plunge into a series of mainly random battles, which you'll probably loose. In theory the year is 1962, however your units appear to be taking a page out of the modern day warfare book and seem to enjoy nothing better than hurling themselves to certain doom in front of enemy units with all the glee of a chicken with its head removed. On the other hand, the enemy is an awesome fighting force with the ability to actually smell your units from a mile away. The merest hint of a pinky finger and they're all over you, destroying your army and taking your position. There are no middle grounds in these battles, it's kill and conquer all the way. Unfortunately for you, unless you spend a lot of time in this game painstakingly moving forward yard by yard, you're going to be treated to the sight of your infantry and hardware taking a fiery pounding a lot. The enemy is also better at hiding than you, though you might occasionally take a position by randomly driving over a trench filled with enemy soldiers that you couldn't see anyway.
