Hinterland: Orc Lords Review
Orc Lords is an extension of the original Hinterland, a medieval-style RTS that combines battles and building into a single, colorful package. The game begins, like so many others, with character selection. After choosing an avatar, you are essentially plopped into the middle of the playing grounds. Your ruler declares that he expects you to turn the land into something great, a task made even more daunting by the game’s lack of training instruction or tutorial sections. This is problematic for any game in the real-time strategy genre; fortunately, Hinterland is relatively familiar in its feel and operation. Juggling the game’s resources require that you take part in a sort of balancing act, comprised of exploration, fighting, and construction.

Since the game starts with very little to offer in the way of resources, it relies upon the player’s initiative to head out into the wilderness and start hacking up baddies. Movement and controls in the game are thankfully simple, though a few things would have been better clarified in a tutorial. This forces you to learn much of the game through raw experience, which some would argue is more effective, anyway. Picking on foes of an inferior level is your best bet for collecting money early in the game. Zombies, dark elves, skeleton warriors – they’re all just mobile purses for you to rip apart. Bullying enough of these baddies also results in a boost to your reputation, and – assuming you are successful in your ventures – more folks will want to join your town. Attracting visitors through your success is crucial to progress, as they help with anything from production of food to creating slick battle equipment for you and your followers. If circumstances demand it (or if you’ve had a particularly bad day), you may conscript villagers and force them to fight for you in battle.

Eragon the video game is based on the movie, which itself is based on the book of the same name. It's a typical fantasy world full of dragons, wizards, and magic, which would seem to lend itself well to a video game adaptation in the vein of the very good series of Lord of the Rings action games that came out alongside those movies. In fact, the Eragon game bears a striking resemblance to those Lord of the Rings games, which only makes sense because the games were all developed by the same company. But while the Lord of the Rings games were well-polished action games, Eragon feels unfinished and lazily thrown together. It's the same basic hack-and-slash principle that's readily accessible to just about any fan of the film, but Eragon feels like a skeleton of a game that's been padded out with some licensed content. There's not nearly enough to make the game interesting or even remotely worth playing, though. The action is mindless and repetitive at best, and buggy and unresponsive at worst. In addition, the presentation ranges from bland to ugly, the game is short, the fixed camera angles are frustrating, and there is no online play. Even for a straightforward action game, Eragon has very little to offer.

For a generation Romanian women were forced to have babies they didn't want. Nicolae Ceausescu imposed a ban on abortion and birth control and forced every woman of child bearing age to have at least four children. Control over reproduction was strictly enforced. The infant and maternal death rate was high. Thousands babies were born with AIDS. In cases when children were born with mental or physical disabilities, their parents were explicitly encouraged to leave them in the special orphanages. In certain cases, when parental agreement was not easily obtainable, parents were made to believe that their infant was dead while in reality the new-born was transferred to the special "child-care" institution. Plagued by horrifying living conditions and wide-spread abuse, these orphanages were often situated in remote areas of the country, keeping the "embarrassing" sight of disabled children away from public view. The film crew shot much of the footage in such institutions and the result is a shockingly graphic sequence of skeleton-like emaciated and neglected children. Ceausescu's lasting legacy is a generation of unwanted children.
