Club drugs and rock stars abide by the same rule: What goes up must come down. After hitting a massive high on 1999's Play, Moby stopped making dance music, opting instead for the downtempo atmospherics of 2002's 18 and the strummed guitars of 2005's Hotel. So it's exciting to hear this forty-two-year-old vegan blogger return to form. A concept album about an all-night bender, Last Night solidifies Moby's link in the chain that binds DJ pioneers like Todd Terry to slinky futurists like Justice. From the space-age-Abba shimmer of "Ooh Yeah" to the itchy funk of the brilliant Nineties house throwback "Disco Lies," Moby goes for groove over texture, relying on high-hats, piano and strings while wisely staying off the mike. The album is billed as a love letter to New York nightlife, but tracks like the dance-hop "I Love to Move in Here" (featuring Grandmaster Caz) feel more like an Irish wake for the era before the city's megaclubs were shuttered. Appropriately, Last Night's only drawback is the harsh slowdown of the trancelike "Degenerates." After so many body-rocking tunes, it's like any sobering slap: a real downer. Tracklist1. Ooh Yeah 5:18 2. I Love To Move In Here 4:40 3. 257.zero 3:37 4. Everyday It's 1989 3:40 5. Live For Tomorrow 4:02 6. Alice 4:26 |

Some ten years after their last formal release, trip-hop pioneers Portishead are releasing their fourth album, cleverly named Third. It will be released in Britain by Island Records. Bristol-based Portishead were one of the most influential British groups of the 1990s. With 1994's Dummy and 1997's self-titled album they came to define a genre called "trip-hop", combining downtempo electronica, jazz and Beth Gibbons' tremulous, despairing vocals. It was bloody depressing, and entirely marvellous. Tracklist:1. Silence / 2. Hunter / 3. Nylon smile / 4. The rip / 5. Plastic / 6. We carry on / 7. Deep water / 8. Machine gun / 9. Small /10. Magic doors / 11. Threads. |

When my producer, Tommy LiPuma, and I were deciding on the songs for my newest CD, it never occurred to me that the songs we ultimately chose would be all about love. I selected songs that I personally liked, and that had a special meaning for me. However, as is often the case during the creative process, a connection among the songs just seemed to organically appear. The songs are indeed about romance. But to me there is a broader and more personal attachment to each of the songs than the standard definition of romantic love might imply. I think that these songs represent the strength of love, including the love of family and friends. But rather than describing my own thoughts about each song, it is my hope that all of you who listen to the music and read the lyrics will discover and imagine your own personal "love scenes" among the mountains, oceans, rain and gardens of these songs. - Diana Krall Grammy nominated, Love Scenes features Diana's mastery of the romantic ballad in an intimate piano trio setting with Russell Malone on guitar and Christian McBride on bass. |

Despite all of the warnings to the contrary, Beyonce delivers the goods on B'Day and moves forward several steps artistically. Her first album Dangerously In Love was a fun, celebratory record, but ultimately it lacks the depth of B'Day. The new album is the work of a woman with focus, energy, empathy, and vocal firepower to spare. Track List 1. Deja Vu featuring Jay-Z 2. Get Me Bodied 3. Suga Mama 4. Upgrade U featuring Jay-Z 5.
